What We Believe

Being a Church that follows in the Christian tradition, the Greek Community Church holds to the doctrine of faith as it is expressed in the Nicene Creed.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Also, having the Holy Scriptures as our guide, we have sketched the following statement of faith, which reflects more particularly a tradition within the wider Protestant-Evangelical movement:

On the Holy Scriptures
We accept the Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, composed of sixty six books, to be the inspired Word of God, without error, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of humans, and the supreme and final authority for all Christian faith and life. (Rom 15:4; 1 Thes 2:13; 2 Tim 3:16-17; 2 Pet 1:21).

On God
We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deut 6:4; Is 43:10; Mat 28:19-20; John 5:18; 10:30; 14:6-17; 2 Cor 13:13; Col 1:13-19; Heb 1:1-3).

On Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. We believe that He arose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven, where He is our High Priest and Advocate at the right hand of God the Father. (Mat 1:23; John 1:1-14; 5:18; 10:30, 33; 1 Cor 15:3-4; 2 Cor 5:21; Gal 4:4; Phil 2:5-11; 1 Tim 2:5; Heb 2:17; 7:26).

On the Holy Spirit
We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and, during this age, to convict humans of sin, to give new life to the believing sinner, and to indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for a life that serves and glorifies God. (John 3:3-8; 14:17; 16:8-10, 14; Tit 3:4-7; 1 Cor 3:16; 1 Cor 12:1-11).

On Humanity
We believe that both man and woman were created in the image of God but fell into sin and are, therefore, lost. As the Scriptures teach, we believe that salvation and the new life are the gift of the Holy Spirit to all who believe. (Gen 1:26-27; Ps 51:7; Is 48:8; Rom 3:10-12, 23; Eph 2:1-3).

On Salvation
We believe that the blood of Jesus Christ, shed as a sacrifice for our sins, and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only those accept the sacrifice of Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit, and thus become children of God. (John 3:16; Rom 5:8; Eph 2:8-9; Col 1:13-14, 21-22; 1 Tim 2:3; Titus 3:5-7; 1 Pet 1:18-23; 2 Pet 2:9; 1 John 4:9).

On Baptism and the Eucharist
We believe that water baptism and the Eucharist are ordinances to be observed by the Church during the present age. They are not to be regarded as means of salvation. (Mat 28:19; Acts 8:36-38; Rom 6:4; 1 Cor 11:23-26).

On the Church
We believe that the true Church is composed of all such persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ have received new life by the Holy Spirit. These are united together in the Body of Christ, His Church, of which He is the Head. All those who are members of the true Church will be eligible for membership in the local church. By membership in the local church believers make manifest God’s embodied community of fellowship and service. (Mat 28:19-20; 1 Cor 12:12-13; Eph 1:22-23; Col 1:18; 1 Pet 2:9).

On Christ’s Return
We believe in the personal and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. This blessed hope forms and guides the personal life and service of every believer. (Mat 24:30; Mark 13:26; Acts 1:11; 1 Thes 4:13-18; Titus 2:13; Jam 5:7-9; 2 Pet 3:11-13; Rev 1:7).

On Resurrection
We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to everlasting life and joy with the Lord; of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment. (Dan 12:2; John 5:28-29; Acts 17:31; Rom 8:23; 1 Cor 15:20-58; Phil 3:21; 1 Thes 4:14-16; Rev 20:11-15).

What We Are Doing
Our vision is to glorify and enjoy God through the proclamation of His Word, the worship of God in our services, and the fellowship of Christians. By God’s grace and for His glory, our mission is to make disciples for Christ, who will treasure God supremely and who will love other people from the heart (I Corinthians 10:31; Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 12:28-31).
